Did you know why God made Mama’s? God cannot take care of
each one of us, so he gave us Mamas.
My Mama’s name is Frieda. She is my first teacher who taught
me to Walk, Talk, Sing & Dance.
My Mama is someone who loves me so much and her love is
without any conditions.
My Mama is someone who makes me realise that I am the best
and that there is no one better than me.
My Happiness is her laughter and my sadness in her
sadness.
She
spends her sleepless nights when I am not well.
My Mama is someone I cannot live without. She is everything
in my life. At the moment she is in UK, i miss her a lot!!!
But I have a Papa who looks after me like my Mama and he is
equally good.
I thank
God who blessed us with my Mama & Papa.
2. My father
The
person I like the most in my family is my father. The thing I like in him
is his gentleness.
He
never beats me but only scolds me.
My
father has a lot of patience.
He also
understands my feelings and sadness. He encourages me to read lot of
books.
Every day he spends some time to play with me. We play card
games, caroms etc.
Before going to bed he asks us about the things happened in
our class.
During the weekend we go for a walk. I long for the weekend

2010. He is 6 years old now. He is in 1st grade. He is cute and
funny.
In the football match, I always choose him in my team. We
both play together, eat together and sleep together.
I can’t live without him for a day. If anybody tortures him,
I bully them. Arjun doesn’t takes any tension about anyone/anything. I
like that nature of him.
He is a total chatter box .He has so many friends in the
colony. He reads a book called ‘The story house story’.
His favorite food is ‘curd rice’. Once he got lost in our
apartment. I searched all the blocks but could not find him.
I was searching him for an hour but couldn’t find him. I got
scared and demented.
At last in the park, I found him wailing. From that day I
didn’t leave him alone in my apartment.
He is good at football, cricket, and skating. His favourite
indoor game is cricket attax and playing hungry shark on my mother’s
mobile.
I remember my 2.5 Years old little sister whenever I read
the proverb ‘Action speaks louder than words’. At this age, she hardly
speaks sentences clearly but her actions speaks instead. There are many
lovely occasions which I remember and cherish while interacting with
her.
I enjoy playing with her. Sometimes her actions makes me
laugh. She used to take our father’s mobile, run towards me and points it
to me. She will be very happy at that time. What she meant by this is
that she wants me to show her favorite cartoon – ‘Masha and the
bear’.
Sometimes we will not hear anything from her. She will be so
silent. And when we look for her, she might be doing something naughty
like playing with my school stuffs or making drawing on the walls or
making a mess of dresses in the cupboards.
She is so happy when she gets chocolates or when we get
ready to go out. Sometimes when we hear a sudden loud cry from her she
will be crying in pain because she might have hit somewhere or fell down.
She has a special sound of cry when she is hungry or sleepy.

The first gift I received was a book named 1001 amazing

full of colorful images and was very attractive.
My father told me that there are some amazing things in this
book and you should try to read two pages every day.
Since then I used to read couple of pages, and sometimes
more every day.
The book has so many interesting facts about space and
planets, rain forests, wild animals, about our body etc.
Even though I received many gifts since then, that book was
something special for me.
I
always keep that book near to my study table.
I still remember that the best part of that day was the
special dessert prepared by my mother.
Mother
Earth has given us many gifts.
One of
them is trees.
Trees
are very important to us.
Many of
our tribes live inside forests which have trees. Trees provide us timber to
make furniture. Wild animals depend on trees for food and shelter.
Trees help to prevent soil erosion and floods.
They give out Oxygen and make the Earth clean and
cool.
Many products such as paper, gum, rubber etc. are obtained
from trees.
Trees
reduce pollution and increase rain. Birds make their nests on
trees.
So
friends, SAVE TREES by not cutting them and make them happy.
The Sun
gives us light.
My
teacher says that it is a ball of fire.
So it
keeps us warm and gives us heat.
My
mother dries our clothes in the sun.
Plants
make their food with the help of sunlight.
When the sun rises it becomes day and when it sets it
becomes night.
The sun
rises in the East and sets in the West.
Every day morning I look at the sun through my
window.
The sun rises early in the morning even before I get up. I like a sunny day as I can play outside with my friends. If there is no sun it will be dark everywhere. So I like the sun very much.
21. If I were a bird
I love pigeons. During our weekends my father used to take
me to a place near the market where there are lots of
pigeons.
Whenever I see them, I wish if I were
a bird and I could also fly like them. With my wings I can fly above all
the buildings in the city.
I can see our school and playground from the top. Planes will fly
near me and I can wave my hands to the pilot.
I will collect small things nearby and will build a nest at
top of a tree.
I will fly to the top of our nearby mango tree and eat lot
of mangoes and will dive into the nearby stream and will have a cool
shower.
Flying high, I can enjoy the fresh breeze and watch the
beautiful sunset from the top.
I will fly around blue oceans and beautiful mountains. If I
were a bird, I would have really enjoyed flying around our wonderful
nature.
I wish god gives me golden wings one day which can appear
and disappear when I wish.
Today my friend asked me a question. What would you do if
you were a tree?
Trees are one of my favorites. They are one of the most
essential and useful thing in this world.
I always loved the thick lush coconut
trees around my house. If I were a tree, I would have provided
shades and nest to all those who lives around me.
Birds would have found a sweet home inside me. I will inhale
lots of carbon dioxide and exhale fresh oxygen for all living things
around me.
My legs will penetrate deep into the soil and will suck
water through my roots to quench my thirst.
I will produce beautiful flowers and fruits and lots of
children will come and play with me.
I can imagine children climbing through my body, plucking
and eating fruits and playing using swings.
I will make our surrounding cooler and also helps to produce
rain.
More interesting, I will be watching all of you from the
top, as I am the tallest in our surrounding.
Tiger
is the national animal of India.
It’s one of the most beautiful animal on earth and are found
in thick jungles.
They have Orange skin with beautiful black vertical stripes
on it.
They
are very fast in their actions.
They hunt deer’s, cattle’s etc for their food and sometime
attack humans too.
They are also good swimmers and can even climb trees.
I always remember the dreadful Sherkhan who always tries to
attack Mougli.
Sadly, Tigers are hunted by us for their skin, teeth, bones
etc.
Sometimes, tigers are caught from the wild and kept in Zoo’s
and also trained to be used in circus for entertainment.
Today tigers are included in the endangered species
list.
Therefore we should not allow anyone to hunt them and should
not disturb their habitat that is forest.
Elephant is considered to be the largest animal in the
world.
They have four legs, two big ears, a long tail and a long
trunk. The long teeth of an elephant is called the Tusk. The trunk is
used to breathe, suck water, to lift things etc.
Elephants are herbivores and they prefer to stay in forests
but humans capture them from forests and use them in circus, wood mills
to lift heavy wood etc. Generally they are gentle in nature. In many of
our temples they are used for religious ceremonies also.
Elephants have high intelligence and high memory power. In
forest they travel in groups under the leadership of a leader usually the
oldest one.
The group will include elder elephants, baby elephants etc.
The elder one always try to protect their younger ones from any other
enemies.
An Elephant can live for more than sixty years. Nowadays the
number of elephants are reducing because they are hunted by humans for
their tusks which is very expensive in international trade.
If proper rules and strict action is not taken against this,
elephants would soon fall under the endangered species category.
25. Dog
Dog is a pet animal and has been proved as very useful and

bones.

proper training.
According
to the varieties of dogs some of them have fur on their whole bodies or
only on their neck.
Generally
they have curved and hairy tail. They differ in their color, size and
weight.
It is
very faithful animal and never cheats its owner.
It guards the house of owner very watchfully from thieves 24
hrs a day.
It is very friendly however become very dangerous whenever goes mad.
26. Peacock
Peacock is known for its mesmerising beauty. This beautiful
bird comes in different colours. There are mainly three species of
peacock. These are the Indian peacock (found in India and Sri Lanka), the
Green Peacock (found in Indonesia) and the Congo Peacock (found in
Africa). While the Indian and Green peacock have an elaborate crest
on their head and long colourful plumage, Congo peacock on the
other hand, has a less attractive crest and short tail. Both Indian and
Green peacock look extremely beautiful whereas the Congo peacock appears
rather dull. The colour of the body and crest is what mainly
distinguishes the Indian peacock from the Green peacock. The Indian
peacock has a blue coloured body whereas the Green peacock has a green
coloured body.
The Indian peacock has been given the stature of the
National Bird of India. This joyful and beautiful bird has been a
significant part of the Indian history as well as mythology.
The colourful and bright feathers that add to the beauty of
peacock also serve as an item to beautify various things and places. A
number of home décor items are crafted around these feathers. These
feathers are also considered auspicious and are used to bring in good
luck and prosperity. Peacock has inspired many notable artists in
the past and continues to do so.
My
class teacher is Mrs. Manel Karunathilake. She is around 54 years
old.
She
always advises us.
Our
class teacher is a teacher in English.
She is
very kind to us.
She
makes us very happy through her lessons. She helps us with our
homework.
She
comes to class early in the morning.
She tries to inculcate good habits and human qualities in
us.
I think she is an ideal teacher and an exemplary character
for all of us.
I love my teacher very much.
28. Trees are our best friends
Trees are one of the best things that mother earth has
provided us.
Trees give us many things. For example, trees provide us
shade. Flowers give us good smell.
Some
climbers give us fruits. Trees like neem are medicinal trees. Butterfly
loves to suck nectar from flowers.
Birds make their nests on trees. The chirping of the birds
in the morning is sweet to the ear.
Monkeys love to jump around the trees. We play under a big
mango tree. When we are hungry, one of us climbs the mango tree and
plucks the sweet mangoes.
When we are very tired we even sleep under the shade of this
tree. It is the chirping of the birds that wakes us up.
Cool breeze soothes our mind when we
are sad. We study together sitting under the shade of the mango
tree.
Trees are indeed a gift from God. It is our duty to protect
them.
29. Importance of Education
Nelson Mandela once said- “Education is the most powerful
weapon we can use to change the world.”
Education by word is an enlightening experience. A process
that cleanses the thoughts and mind of every person to experience the difference
between right and wrong.
A tool that helps a person to be focused and ensure to be
independent enough to change self, family and society and the entire
world.
Education ensures equality, self-dependence, responsibility,
confidence, humanity and expands the horizon of one's life.
True Education doesn’t just mean studies through books and
schools.
Every learning experience make a person educated. The
gathered knowledge will never be stolen from a person.
Education can be utilized for exploration of the different
dimensions of life and the human conditions.
Eleanor Roosevelt famously said “Education is essential to
good citizenship and that education is important to life because it
enables people to contribute to their community and their
country.”
To nurture and transform a young mind to mature and
responsible human being, education is the only path.
Empowering women through education
improves the morals at home and indirectly the society also.
Considering the importance of Education, good and quality
education should be accessible to all children in the society which
ensures the uplifting of self and the society in whole.
30.
Importance of Sports
In this day and age, when academics are not the sole factor
for success, students are required to be well-versed in a variety of
aspects.
Sports is one such arena which is incorporated into the
extra-curricular activities in school. It not only serves as a break from
study routine, but also helps a student remain healthy – physically and
mentally.
Doctors advise to stay active as a way of dealing with many
health problems. Those who indulge in athletic activities are lesser
prone to falling ill. This also increases their life span. It appears
that students who are able to balance their studies, fitness and
leisure tasks have a better chance of leading happier lives.
In addition to health benefits, sports also improve your
personality. You tend to become more strong and tolerant. American boxer
and activist, Muhammad Ali, said, “Champions aren’t made in
gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a
desire, a dream, a vision.” It takes a lot to commit to sports, but
the benefits are so many, that it’s all worth it.
You need to be motivated for yourself, in order to achieve
your goals. Proper introduction to sports also allows a student to
consider it as a potential career choice.
People who are extremely passionate about a sport are able
to devote all of their time and efforts into excelling at it.
Schools and colleges provide the platform necessary to take
up a sport as a mainstream career. Grab every opportunity that comes
your way. You never know how it may help you.
Involvement in sports is something you ought to do
willingly, for yourself. It should not depend on anyone else’s opinions
or purpose.
Students should be made aware of the perks of taking part in
sports. This would encourage them to take active decisions regarding
their lives and be responsible.
31. Unity is Strength
The phrase, “Unity is Strength”,
is more than just a proverb. It has been proven since the beginning
of mankind. When divided, individuals have failed in
achieving what they had aspired. But together, they have
been able to conquer a lot more.
Take a look at your local history. You will surely notice
how groups of people have stood for a certain cause, and because of their
strength, their fight has had a powerful effect.
Unity is an important factor even within a family and social
group. Family members, who stick together and support each other, tend to
have lasting bonds.
This enables them to solve each other’s problems in a
valuable manner. If there is no unity in friendship, cracks begin to form
in the foundation and could potentially lead to
misunderstandings.
French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, believed that “There
are only two forces that unite men – fear and interest.” However, the
term interest, here, is roughly used.
People
can be united because of their need for a sense of belonging, which has
nothing to do with common interests.
They could also be united because of
a shared history or past, as is the case with citizens of a
nation.
A lot of social groups have been able to get desired results
because they stand united.
Their attempts are directed towards a single goal, which
increases the chances of success.
Factors like trust, encouragement, understanding and love
help maintain unity among people. As long as good thoughts motivate
people, they will stand united and be stronger for it.
The moment there is a weak link in the group, everything
collapses. Remember to stand tall against all hardships.
32. Advantages and
disadvantages of Television
Some people claim that television is the root of all evil,
while others think of television as a best friend.
Some blame the television for society's violence,
consumerism, and misinformation, while others see it as a rich resource
for education and global understanding.
Television plays a very important role in our daily life. It
keeps us updated. Most of the people spent their free time watching
television.
It entertains us in many ways by showing movies, songs,
cartoons, serials and most importantly what’s going around the world i.e.
news. Television is also useful for the developing country like
India.
Advantages:
We come to know about current affairs, news going all around
in the world. Children also get entertain by watching cartoons, stories
that provide you moral values and lessons. You can also watch food
recipes and try them at home. You can watch movies, listen to
songs, watch daily soaps, horror series etc.
Disadvantages:
If there are advantages of watching television, there are
disadvantages too.
Watching television in excess can affect our health that is
it affects our eyes, makes lazy like couch potatoes etc.
Television also makes a lot of sounds which affect our
minds. Many TV shows are not suitable for innocent children.
We compromise are sleep when addicted to
television.
We sometimes get negatively inspired by our favorite actors,
actresses.
33. Advantages and
Disadvantages on technology
Technology has brought about a revolution in the modern
world. It has made our lives easy and fast. Technology has a made the
world a global village. Technology is a double edged weapon. Today I
am
going to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of
technology.
Let us look into the advantages of technology first.
Traveling was time consuming since animals were being used as vehicles.
Now we have planes, trains etc. which has made our lives easy. We have
made vast progress in the medical field too. Almost all vital
organs can be transplanted. This includes heart, liver, kidney, lungs
etc.
We also have advanced machines to perform various
operations. Just by sitting in our room we can see a person and speak to
our near and dear ones, no matter how far they are. Incidents that
have happened anywhere in the world reach us within seconds. We can even
shop, book ticket, read books etc. sitting at home.
Things like fridge, microwave oven, AC etc. have made our
lives easier. So you see technology has made the world a global
village.
Now let us look into the disadvantages. Technology has made
man machine addicted. As we are progressing, our lifespan has become
short. This is due to the lack of physical activity. Many people
are addicted to various gadgets around them like, remote controls, mobile
phones, Lifts etc.
All these things make us lazy. Children are addicted to
games on phones and laptops. They have stopped playing outside. At a very
young age, they have various diseases like diabetes, obesity, blood
pressure etc. There is less communication between people. People lead a
sedentary lifestyle and hence diseases are there constant
companions.
So we as a new generation, let us take an oath that we will
use technology wisely as a means to progress and lead a healthy
lifestyle. Thus we shall leave behind a better platform for the
coming generations.
34. My first day at school
My mother accompanied me to school on the first day. Other
parents accompanied their children as well. We all waited in front of the
school office.
Soon a teacher came and led us to some classrooms. There we
were put into four separate classes.
This was when some children began to cry as the parents were
not allowed into the classrooms.
I did not cry because I had been to kindergarten
before.
Actually my mother went home soon after for she knew I would
be all right.
It was an enjoyable time for me as I got to know my new
classmates.
The teacher was very busy writing down our particulars so we
had plenty of time to ourselves.
Meantime some children continued to sob while their parents
looked in anxiously through the windows.
Soon recess came. Some of us headed for the tuck shop while the
rest headed for their parents.
I bought a drink with the money my mother gave me. Getting
to know my new friends had made me thirsty.
After recess we went back to our classroom and my new
friends and I managed to coax two boys to stop crying.
In fact, soon we were laughing and playing together. Once in
a while the teacher had to tell us to keep quiet as we were making too
much noise.
Still some parents looked in anxiously through the
windows.
Finally the bell rang for us to go home. Some of us were
very relieved to be reunited with our parents.
I too was glad to see my mother waiting for me at the school gate. I had made many friends. It had been a wonderful first day at school.
35. My Classmates
We are a noisy lot, that is what our teachers say about us.
This is largely due to Ah Keong. He is the noisiest of us
all.
His voice is like that of a bull frog but volumes louder. It
seems that he cannot talk softly. Actually he does not talk, he shouts.
Perhaps his living with his family of ten children has something to do
with it.
In this noisy bunch lives a boy who hardly ever opens his
mouth. This is Padma, the boy who sits next to me. He is such a gentle
and soft creature that one would think that he is a sissy. This is
not so. No one dares call him one for he is a member of the
school's Karate Club.
Then there is Doris, our class monitor. She sits right in
front of the teacher's table. She is such a model student that all the
teachers love her.
We all love her for she does not boss us around. She has
given up doing that long ago. All she does is to make sure that the
teachers have sufficient chalk and that the classroom is clean.
Right at the back of the class sits our class sleepy head. Mat
seems to need more sleep than others. He catches cat-naps in between
lessons.
The astounding thing is that he can fall asleep almost
instantly. The moment the teacher leaves after a lesson, Mat's snores
start up and we know he is at it again. Remarkably he wakes up when
the next teacher arrives.
Every class has a clown. Our class has Jack, otherwise known
as "Jacko The Clown". He is always up to some prank or other, putting
tails on the boys' pants, frogs in the girls' desks and powdered
chalk on the teacher's chair.
So when we hear a girl scream or see men-teachers strolling
around with chalk on the seat of their pants, we know that Jacko has
struck again.
The other classmates too have their
own unique personalities. Each contributes his or her part to our
class.
All in all we are a group of young children who perhaps are
a bit noisy at times, but on the whole are well-behaved and pleasant to be
with.
36. My neighbours
Many of us live in housing estates. I
live in one myself. The one thing about living in a housing estate
is that we have many neighbours.
Next to my house on the right lives a family whose parents
seem to be always scolding the children. I do not know them very well
because they always appear angry.
Never a day passes without hearing the children crying and
the parents shouting at the top of their voices.
On the other side of my house, however, lives a very quiet
and polite family. Mr. Verghese is a quiet man who seems to manage his
family very well.
Though he has four children, which is one more than the
other family, I never hear him scold his children. So his children never
cry. What a wonderful family they are.
Further down the road is a family whose radio is switched on
most of the time, except late at night. His immediate neighbours must
have a tough time putting up with the noise of the radio.
Then there is a family whose members seem to live in a world
of their own. Many times we have met along the road and not once has any
of them even nod his or her head in acknowledgement.
They are not blind or deaf. Yet they can walk straight past
as if I am not there at all. I would not say that they are unfriendly. I
guess they are simply not interested in knowing their neighbours.
On the opposite side of the road live Mr. Lim and his
family. Mr. Lim is a bird-collector. So everyday a dozen or more birds
sing melodious tunes right beneath his front porch.
It is preferable to the blare of the other neighbour's
radio. However the bird droppings can give off an awful stench.
These are some of the neighbours living near me. There are
others that I have yet to meet. However I am careful not to intrude on
their privacy.
The friendly ones smile or raise their hands. The
not-so-friendly ones look away. I have to live among them, friendly or
not.
37. My Hobby
My hobby is reading. I read story books, magazines,
newspapers and any kind of material that I find interesting.
This hobby got started when I was a little boy. I had always
wanted my parents to read fairy tales and other stories to
me.
Soon they got fed up and tired of having to read to me
continually. So as soon as I could, I learned to read.
I started with simple ABC books. Soon I could read simple
fairy tales and other stories. Now I read just about anything that is
available.
Reading enables me to learn about so many things that I
would otherwise not know.
I learned about how people lived in bygone days of magic and
mystery.
I learned about the wonders of the world, space travel,
human achievements, gigantic whales, tiny viruses and other fascinating
things of our world.
The wonderful thing about reading is that I do not have to
learn things the hard way.
For example, I do not have to catch a disease to know that
it can kill me. I know the danger so I can avoid it.
Also I do not have to go deep into
the jungle to learn about the tiger. I can read all about it in a
book.
Books provide the reader with so much information and
facts.
They have certainly helped me in my daily life. I am better
equipped to cope with living.
Otherwise I would go about ignorantly learning things the
hard way.
So I continue to read. Besides being
more informed about the world, I also spend my time
profitably.
It is indeed a good hobby.
38. My father, My Super Hero
Super Hero’s….Ben ten, superman, Spiderman…. there're tons
of them - but for me MY father is a super hero. I chose this topic to
thank my father for his love, for playing a starring role and influencing
my life. Father - the coolest 6 letter word to happen in my life.
F - For all things you have taught me
A - And for promising me that you will never leave me T – Tagging
along and supporting me
H - Helping me in everything I face
E - Every day you are there for me
R - Raising me with utmost love and care
My mom says the first word I said is Papa. The happiest
moment every day in my life is when he knocks at the door in the evening.
As he enters there is so much excitement, he hugs me, kisses me and
carries me on his shoulder as if we are meeting after ages. Ina day
several times he says I LOVE U ACHU. He is my inspiration, like a
lighthouse to ships. He has always been a good listener,
understands me, trusts me and advices me .fie supports all my
extracurricular activities, weekly twice, he drives me for my dance
class, coming from Minaabdulla to farwaniya and then to salmiya. How can
I not be proud of him? Every evening we play games together, also
teaching me to be powerful, self-reliant and courageous. We pray and
have dinner together. Sometimes when he drives home from Saudi and
I demand for dinner out, and though he is tired
and hates hotel food, cheerfully he will take me, cracking
all sardarji jokes, instilling in me, the importance of family bonds and
sacrifice. At bedtime, we play Kaun Banega Crorepati, it's so much fun,
he will ask me questions and if I don't know any answer, I will use phone
a friend and call my father for the answer, thus building
self-confidence while imparting wisdom and knowledge. However busy
he may be, he has never missed any of my cultural programmes and
records them. When I am sick, he will be with me throughout, I feel
secure when I cling on to his chest like a baby kangaroo. When mom scolds
me, he will always say - my son - he is the best, he is the winner.
Believe me, he has never scolded me till date.
He has taught me many valuable lessons on positive thinking
and makes me apply it. He never says NO for anything. He has made me set
my goals and every night before I sleep he makes sure that I read it.
Friends! Believe me, I topped in all programmes I attended. It does
really happen! The other thing he taught me is SECRET. Love
everything in this universe and the universe will give you back
everything you desire. Lastly he taught me to pray to the subconscious
mind about whatever you wish, and for sure it really works our dreams do
come true! Those who don't believe in Superheroes have never met my
father. Even when I am all grown up, I know, that I will be glad
that I have my own, unique, Superhero, my best friend, the one and only
one - who can make me smile in any circumstance - my father.
39. Save Earth
Henry David Thoreau the famous American poet and philosopher
once said, “Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”
This statement brings to light how fortunate we are, to be living
on a planet that provides everything for us.
Save Earth campaigns refer to the attempts made by people to
conserve the flora and fauna; to preserve the state of the water bodies,
the atmosphere – all of which are essential for the growth and
development of beings that inhabit Earth.
As the standard of life is increasing
exponentially, in this 21st century, it is becoming more and more difficult to safeguard
the planet that was given to us.
Our wants are mounting up to such an extent, that Mother
Earth is being wrung dry to satisfy us. While every individual can adopt
basic measures, to contribute towards saving Earth, severe damage
is being inflicted because of deforestation and pollution.
Progressive countries are competing to have an upper hand in
different fields such as technology, tourism, education etc.
But the important question is, what progress are we really
making, if we are adding to the destruction of Earth? Governments are
becoming alert, and taking steps to reduce the ozone
depletion.
People are actively involved in planting more trees,
protesting against construction of unnecessary facilities, reducing
emissions from vehicles and efficient disposal of waste. On the other
hand, global warming isn’t diminishing and is leading to fluctuating
weather.
We must consider the benefits of living a simpler life, so
that our future generations have a planet to live on. Simple does not
necessarily equate to low quality of living.
We can still learn to be content with minimal luxuries.
Also, progress should be made using safer procedures. Otherwise, we may
head towards a fancier lifestyle and be left with a crumbling planet.
40. A birthday party
Fiona is my neighbour. She turned twelve recently and her
parents held a birthday party for her. I was one of those invited.
The party began at about three in the afternoon. There were
about twenty of us children gathered in Fiona's house.
We were all dressed in our best clothes. Everyone,
especially Fiona, wore a happy smile.
We gave our presents to Fiona and she happily opened
them.
It must really be exciting to receive all those
presents.
After that Fiona's mother served us soft drinks and
delicious titbits.
We then played some games like "Musical Chairs"
and "Treasure Hunt". The winners were given prizes.
At about four-thirty Fiona's mother brought out the birthday
cake.
It was beautifully decorated with pink and white
icing.
Twelve colorful candles sat in the middle of the cake. We
all sang "Happy Birthday" to Fiona after which she blew out the
candles and cut the cake.
We clapped out hands eagerly.
We helped ourselves to slices of the delicious cake. Then we
continued our games.
Finally at about six in the evening the party came to an
end.
We were all tired but happy.
The parents of the other children came to collect
them.
I helped Fiona and her mother clean up the mess we
made.
After that I walked home which was only two doors away.
41. If I Were a Millionaire
We all love dreams, especially good ones. Dr. A. P. J. Abdul
Kalam once said 'You have to dream before your dreams can come
true'.
I dream to become a millionaire. But there is a reason why I
think I should earn big money. I belong to a middle class family and I
have one little brother.
My loving parents supports me well and fulfil all my wishes.
But sometimes I see my parents struggling. So if I become rich, the first
thing I want to do is to support my parents so that they can take
some rest. Then, I will fulfil the wishes of my little brother. He
is fond of toys and his biggest dream is to go to Disney
land.
With money, I can easily fulfil his wishes and take my
family to Disney land. I will surely save some money for our future needs
as well.
Whenever I travel to my school, I used to see lots of children
in the street begging for money, cleaning cars and selling balloons. I
used to wonder why those kids were not going to school.
Once I
asked my father about them. He explained to me about the problems of
poverty and told me that some of them are even orphans.
I felt really sad that day and realized how lucky I am. If I
am a millionaire, I will surely support them by donating money to support
their needs. I will also open a school for them and will provide
free education.
I remember how our watchman uncle in my school once
struggled for his son’s treatment. We all donated some money for his
treatment.
I will construct hospitals for the poor and old aged people
and will take care of them. I know that simply dreaming will not make one
rich.
I need to work hard and study well to make my dreams come
true.
Every day, I pray to god to keep me focused in my studies
and inspire me to work hard so that one day I can become a millionaire
and help others.
42. My Ambition in Life- To be a
Scientist
I always wondered what I want to become. My choices always
changed from time to time- from Army Man to Police to Engineer to Doctor.
But all that changed the day I saw the news about the success of
Indias’ Mangalyaan Mars mission.
It was an inspiring moment when our honourable Prime
Minister declared to the nation that the mission was successful. The
scenes of our scientists in ISRO celebrating excited me. It was a moment
of pride when India received appreciation from all over the world.
Since then I believe that my life’s mission is to become a scientist. My
dad and Mum was also happy hearing it from me.
The
life of a Scientist is both thrilling and exciting. A scientist is always
engaged in a quest to explore new knowledge and discoveries. I believe
that a scientist can serve the society and help to empower the poorest
of the poor. A Scientist can help farmers to develop new seeds and
fertilisers, Can help patients with better medicine and new treatments
-making it affordable, Can help poor children with new technologies for
their education, Can develop new clean technologies for power this
world thereby bringing down pollution in this world.
I got
mesmerised by the life stories of Indian Science pioneers like Sir CV Raman,
J.C Bose, Srinivasan Ramanujan and Satyedranath Bose. While CV
Raman won the Nobel Prize in Physics, JC Bose invented the wireless
transmission which revolutionised the world.
Srinivasan
Ramanujan’s mathematical discoveries are still actively researched by
scientists all around the word and Satyendra Bose invented BOSON, the god
particle.
More important, I believe that a scientist can solve many
challenges the world is facing right now. In fact, the rapid growth in
science and technology will be the key driving force in our progress,
making this world safer for our future generations.
I am fully aware that I have to study
hard and should do a lot of hard work and dedication to become a
scientist. But I am determined to face those challenges.
I always pray to god to give me strength and courage and
motivation to work hard so that I can make my dreams come true and serve
my country.
43. Don’t Judge a Book by its
Cover
The
English idiom "don't judge a book by its cover" is a figurative
phrase which means "you shouldn't judge significance of something by
its outward appearance only".
It is easier and faster to look at the instantaneous outer
features of an object or a person. Many cannot deal with the troubling
feeling of doubt (fear) when conversing with a stranger so to make it
less challenging for themselves, they put a label on their new
associate and act accordingly.
For example, you see a good-looking person and a bad looking
person. You know nothing about them except their skin colour, their
physical traits and fashion. Then what? You make all sorts of thoughts
and make a massive data in a minute just taking a look of their
outward appearance.
You may get attracted to the good-looking one but that could
be a disaster for your life. He/she may not possess any real ability or
talent. He/she can even turn out to be
corrupt too. Outward appearance can be greatly
misleading.
There are utterly valueless things that look so good and
taking them on their face value is foolishness.
On the other hand, some of the ugly looking things possess
immense value. Their appearance is in no way equivalent to the worth they
have. A person must be judged on the basis of his/her capabilities and
not on his/her external appearance. Many of the truly good and
great person are respectful.
Therefore assessment of people on the basis of appearance is
a futile approach. For some people book cover is the summary of whole
book in one page. Designers use colours, pictures and text to give a
good impression of the content that the reader will find
inside.
Book cover is a great tool to develop the curiosity of the
reader as the world is really fast that we have only time to take a look
on its cover, so the cover is where they either accept or reject the
book. However the books with eye-catching covers do not really mean that
it is worth reading, it could be a waste of your precious
time.
So
readers, do not get misguided by the outward appearance of anything
whether a person, a book or a thing.
44. How I celebrated
my birthday
I was anxious about the day. I know that my parents was
planning something special for my birthday, as they always did, but this
time, got a smile back to my repeated questions. As different from last
year, I didn't see any body invited this time and no shopping as well.
Did they forget? I remember last year’s birthday bash, with all my
friends and relatives partying, making it a lovely evening. That evening
my parents took me for a shopping, gifted me some chocolates’ and a
pair of new dress. I felt really happy and thanked them for their
wonderful gifts. But what about tomorrows party? i again asked with
excitement. My parents smiled at each other. ‘Varun, we will go for a
trip tomorrow. But make sure you take your savings box along’ Said my
father.
I felt exited, a birthday tour. I felt like going to the moon.
The next morning, i woke up early. I was not able to control my
excitement. I took my shower and put on my new dress. My father and
mother gave me a kiss and wished me all the best and gave blessings. We
prayed to the almighty and thanked him for all the fortunes showered on
us. I also prayed for an additional support for mathematics as I found
the new lessons difficult to crack. I jumped into the front seat. I
always loved my trips in front seats, sometimes annoying my dear
mother. As we started our Journey, My father told me that today we will
have your birthday lunch with some new friends. I was still confused to
where we are going. Soon we reached the place.
It was an old building at the banks of river periyar. Some
kids were playing around. I felt like joining them but decided to
stick on with my parents. One elderly person greeted us and took us to
their office. My father asked me to donate my coin box to that uncle. I
saw a big smile in his face as I passed on my coin Box. I was a bit
disappointed. The old man started explaining about his activities. Soon I
realized that all kids which I saw playing outside where either orphans
or under privileged, neglected by our society. He told us, how many
of them had stopped going to schools and the difficulties he faced
to build up a system to support them. Today 200 of those children is living
in that place. I had tears in my eyes. I realized how lucky I am and felt
really happy that my small coin box will go in support to his activities.
He also told us the importance of supporting our society and why these
kids deserve our support. He also thanked my parents for their
decision to support by deciding to cut off the spending of my birthday
party and donate the money for a cause. He took us around and introduced
us to the group of children. They greeted us and soon we became good friends.
We started playing in the open ground and had a great time playing
together.
Soon we were called for the Lunch. We all sat in a big hall
and took a delicious traditional lunch. There was happy faces all
around. It was time for us to leave the place. I was a bit hesitant to
leave that place, as I again wanted to play with them. My father promised
me that he will take me to this place often. As we drove back I told my
mother- This was my best birthday party ever and the most inspirational
day in my life. Thank you. I still remember the smiling face of my
father as he drove us back home.
45. Mother’s Day
‘Mother is the one who can take the place of all, but can’t
be replaced’. She is the most precious and important factor of our
life.
The moment a girl realises the life growing within, the
world around her changes, attitude changes. She learns to love and accept
the world in a wider perspective.
Her love is deep like an ocean and she is the sky where we
fly high safe. I have always felt that through our eyes she can read our
mind. None of our worries are hidden from her and without her we
are nothing.
She gives us birth and finds herself responsible for the
right upbringing of a responsible citizen. For that reason, it is often
seen that, a child is never blamed for his mistakes like we blame
his/her mother for the same.
She has dedicated herself for her family and takes
deliberate effort to pass on the values to her kids, just like what she
gained from her mother. She sets the example for next generation.
She is the only one who works selflessly twenty four hours
every day without any gain, to keep her family happy. Mother can be compared to
nature who gives away all it has, but keeps no expectation of
something in return.
She even fights with the circumstances to keep their child
safe and sound. As per the Indian culture, she is considered as the
primary God of every living being.
Every child might have heard her saying “you won’t
understand now, but once you become a mother you will remember my
words”.
This is a phrase passed down for generation by mothers. We
do not need a special day to thank and honour them for their love, care
and affection. She will always be there for us till she breathes
the last. So let’s take opportunity to thank her from the bottom of
our hearts, for her kind gestures unlimited help and love.
46. World Water Day March 22
Three most essential things for Humans to survive in this
planet may be easily identified as Air, Water and Food. As our population
increased, pressure to tap more and more resources also increased
which lead to the over use and exploitation of all Natural
resources. As a result of this human greed over centuries, today,
communities across the world faces acute water shortages and air
pollution. Today, we are left with a crisis where over 663 million
people are living without a safe water supply close to their homes,
spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources,
and trying to cope up with the health impacts of using contaminated
water.
World Water Day is a United Nation Initiative and is all
about educating our society about the preciousness of water and taking
action to tackle the water crisis. It is an annual event celebrated
every year on March 22. The day focuses attention on the importance of
fresh water and advocates for the sustainable management of
freshwater resources.
World Water Day is also used to highlight required
improvements for access to water, sanitation, hygiene facilities in
developing countries. Every year the awareness campaign will be on a
specific theme. This year’s focus is on reducing the wastage of
water.
This world is not only for us. This is also for our future
generations. It’s important that we not only live here but also leaves a
warm and fresh environment for our future generations. We, as
students, can also play our part in building up this awareness among the
society. Today let’s declare that water is as precious as Gold and we will
not waste it unnecessary.
Let’s encourage water conservation techniques like rain
water harvesting and water recycling for sanitation and gardening. Let’s
be vigilant about water pollution. Let’s not allow our fresh water
bodies to be used at Dump yards for waste. It’s the responsibility of
every citizen around the globe to be a part of this exercise so that we
can make this world a better place.
47. Things I like to do
I like playing the guitar. Though I am not very good at it
and am still learning, I can play some tunes.
I spend quite a lot of time playing the guitar so much so I get
scolded sometimes by my mother.
I suppose I do tend to spend a bit too much time with it.
Anyhow, playing the guitar is very enjoyable.
I also like taking evening walks around my neighbourhood. In
the evening the air is cool and refreshing.
The children are busy playing and the neighbours are
friendlier. So I take leisurely strolls, sometimes stopping to play with
other children and sometimes stopping to chat with the neighbours.
Another thing that I like doing is getting up late in the
morning. During weekdays I have to get up early or I will not get to
school on time.
On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays,
it is so pleasurable to just lie in bed in the morning without
having to get up and hurry to school.
Again I tend to lie too long in bed and my mother has to
come and tell me to get up.
Listening to the radio and watching television are also
things I like to do.
Of course I do not listen and watch everything.
I only tune in to my favorite programmes and enjoy myself
while seated on my favorite chair.
There are other things that I enjoy doing too but there
seems to be not enough time to do them all.
So I generally just stick to doing those I mentioned plus
any others that I have time for.
48. Honesty is the best
policy
Everyone is familiar with the stories of Pinocchio and the
boy who cried Wolf. While Pinocchio’s nose elongated every time he told a
lie, the boy in the other story met with a brutal fate, upon lying
to the villagers.
These stories are an attempt to teach children the
importance of being honest. They depict the consequences of lying. But
what they do not throw light on is the fact that, being dishonest to
others is being dishonest to oneself.
Honesty enables a person to be the best version of them. It
shows that they are a genuine person, with nothing to hide.
It allows them to fully be at peace with who they are and
not feel the need to lie or hide anything. Moreover, those who are honest
are trustworthy. Such attributes make them a likeable person.
Benjamin Franklin’s quote, “Honesty is the Best Policy.” is
a plain truth of life.
Honesty is one of those roads, that
may not always be easy, but once taken, they simplify your life to
a great extent.
Those who are honest have fewer things to worry
about.
They are known to have stronger relations with people.
Lying, on the other hand, is a negative habit.
It’s like quicksand, in the sense that once you start lying,
you are caught in a trap. You end up lying more, as time goes
by.
It creates a bad impression on people. And bad impressions
are difficult to get rid of.
Regardless of your intentions, honesty is usually the best
tactic to a healthier lifestyle.
There’s no greater good you can do
than be honest with yourself about what you believe and want out of
life.
It brings together the body, mind and soul and establishes a
sense of balance.
49. Nature
Nature is the most precious gift given to mankind. We have a
duty to save nature. But man is destroying it for his own selfish
needs.
He is cutting down trees, killing wildlife and polluting the
air with poisonous gases. Many fish species have perished, flowers
withered and bright, colourful butterflies can hardly be seen any
more.
We are steadily moving towards the path of destruction. Man
is selfish in his needs and destroying the land for his own progress.
New industries and factories are being built without taking into
account the smoke and chemicals emitted from these places.
Beautiful villages are used for industrial purpose. The
lands of the poor farmers are being bought by paying meagre compensation
to cater to the needs of the industrialists.
We forget the fact that animals and birds are made homeless
when forests are destroyed. Thus they come out of their habitat and enter
the residency areas of human beings in search of food.
That is the reason these days we find the many animals on
the roads rather than in the jungles. We are taught in schools that
plants give us food and shelter.
The current generation can at least imagine about the plants
and trees but the future generation will see them only in laptops, as
they would have already become extinct.
Imagine a world where there will be no forests, only
concrete jungles, no water but acid rain and no fresh air only
smoke-filled clouds.
The ozone layer has already started depleting. We, being the
torch bearers of the future of mother earth, has a duty to propagate the
love for nature. We have to preserve it and save our planet from
being wiped out.
When we teach our children A for apple; tomorrow he will ask
us, “Mother, what is an apple?” So let’s all take a pledge to plant at
least one tree in our gardens and nurture it.
Let us take a promise to plant at least one tree today and
join the efforts to save this nature.
50. Parents are Visible God
Everyone loves their father and mother. Don’t you? There is
no doubt that every child sitting here loves and respects their father
and mother. However is there any difference which we can find unique in
India in our attitudes towards parents? Yes, we should be proud to say
that in our culture and tradition, our parents are treated as equal to
god.
Our parents are the one whom we interact daily. Every day we
see how they struggle to keep us happy. Our parents work hard to give us
the best. They sacrifice their luxuries to provide food and education for
us. That’s why we consider them as visible god. Indian Culture clearly
defines the importance of expressing love and obligations towards
our parents. Our ancient Vedic text says ‘Matha Pitha Guru Deva’ which
means father, mother and teacher should be treated as god itself.
Bhagawan Vishnu Once said to Marekendeya Rishi that those
who serve their parents, thinking that their father as the Lord of
Universe, Mother as Holy River Ganga are my best devotees. This simply
demonstrates the importance of serving our parents. Infect, Bhagawan has
himself demonstrated how we should respect elders and parents. Sri
Rama, chose to forest for 14 years to keep his father’s words given to
his step mother. Even though he underwent years of hardship, he never
became angry with her and forgive her.
Another example is the story of Ganesh and Karthikeya. Once
mother Parvathi set a race for them. She said that both should race by
travelling around the world and the one who completes first will get a
special mango. Hearing
this Subramanya Immediacy started and flew on the back of
his peacock. But Ganesha started walking around his parents. As he
completed his third round Karthikeya finished his trip and landed.
However Parvathi declared Ganesha as the winner after hearing Ganesha who
said My world is my parents and I finished my travel around the
world.
Another example is when Guru Shankaracharya’s who as a boy
saw his mother struggling to bring water from a distant river. One day
when she fell ill, Shakaracharya and his friends dug a channel from the
distant river right up to his home so that his mother don’t need to
struggle to get water. He also gave a promise to his mother when he
took the decision to be a Saint. He kept his words by fulfilling
the wish of his dying mother and appeared before his using his Yogic
powers.
Dear Friends, Its time to realize that the very existence of
us is because of our parents. Serving them is the most pious act as per
our culture and tradition. So today let’s take a pledge that we will
always listen to them and will never hurt them through our actions or worlds,
we should always love and respect our father and mother and help
them when they need.
